Pick of the week: December 10, 2010
Hello from Inside!
Educating children about food and nutrition has been one of the big themes in both Japan and the rest of the world recently. In Japan, the word “食育” (shoku-iku, a coined term for “food education”) has become very popular in the past several years. For some decades, most public schools have provided the pupils with lunches with calculated nutrition. Insider remembers being given monthly lunch calendars from schools… Insider was looking forward to his/her favorite meal such as Japanese-style curry & rice :-)
Insider used to think that grade schools in the US didn’t care much about educating their pupils about nutrition. He/she heard that because those soda or chocolate companies donate funds for schools, they were allowed to install vending machines (for Coke, M&Ms, etc…) in school buildings. (Don’t know if this info is credible… sorry if not correct) However, it seems that I was wrong. Many schools and universities have begun advocating the importance of nutritional education!
So this week’s pick is a series of fun videos:
NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY
Fun with Food Safety Music Videoshttp://iuniv.tv/top/detailPlaylist/pid/3051
Although most videos on this playlist is about food safety such as the importance of heating up the meat until it’s not raw, I was interested in the “Veggie Believer” video!

The “I” in this song is just like Insider! :-)
All videos feature songs that are pretty much the ‘cover’ of an existing song. For example, the Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” becomes “You Better Wash Your Hands”. LoL Something nice to share with your family members!
