Pick of the week: November 12, 2010
Hello from Inside!
This week I have picked up four Russian-related contents on iUniv’s top feature page, to coincide with President Medvedev’s recent visit to the so-called “Northern Territories”. I thought that it would be a good opportunity to try to understand the country more, whether or not you support it.
One of the videos I enjoyed was
MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY
IPS560 - Intro to International Migration - Tab 1
(small) Professor Tsuneo Akaha: Populations and Migration in the Russian Far East
http://iuniv.tv/top/episode/eid/44083/pid/3048Although Professor Akaha’s lecture does not cover the Northern Territories, it was interesting on its own right. He mentioned about the Chinese and Korean immigrants in the Russian Far East region (such as Vladivostok and Khabarovsk), which I had no awareness of. But come to think of it, China and Korea are Russia’s neighbor countries…
He also mentioned that the Russian Far East had mostly been out of Moscow’s sight. So the fact that President Medvedev actually visited the territory does mean something…
By the way for those who are interested in the Northern Territories dispute, I would recommend these Wikipedia pages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuril_Islands_dispute (English)
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%8C%97%E6%96%B9%E9%A0%98%E5%9C%9F%E5%95%8F%E9%A1%8C (Japanese)
Another interesting video was
Nottingham University
Expert perspectives
Windows on Warhttp://iuniv.tv/top/episode/eid/21342/pid/1673
This one is about the political propaganda posters created in Soviet during WWII. While I wish that war propaganda posters would never be created again (as I do not support war as the solution of disputes), the posters are very unique and interesting to see.
